Barn Guestbook Archive: April — June 2002

Hello, I love this site. We bought our first home just over 2 years ago, and it has this great old barn on the property. My goal is to restore it into a useful car garage. It's a full two story structure, but sadly, one entire half of the building had to come down. Check out a page with pics I've put up on Geocities. Any hints or ideas, feel free to email me! Here's the page --> http://www.geocities.com/sunhpux/barn_page.html

I'm trying to find a barn to rent in NJ for my wedding reception - sometime within the next year. There are so many beautiful old barns in Flemington, NJ - but I don't think any of them get rented out. Can anyone help me? I'd really like some place secluded, off the beaten path. I can't imagine a more perfect setting for a wedding reception. Thanks for any help you can give. :)

Wow, lots of folks looking for the same thing I'm looking for... Does anyone know of a renovated (but still pretty rustic) barn that could accomodate a wedding with about 100 guests in the Catskills for late September/early October 2002? I'd love to find one...

We've got some extra metal cupolas from a barn we had to tear down - two of them, 8 ft tall, in the normal Midwest style. One has a lightning rod & partial weather vane. Where would be a good place to sell them? Ebay? Thanks.

I haven't gotten into this enough to know for sure exactly what kind of barn I have for sure. It is beam and post. the wood is oak I think. The roof is gambrel. It sits on a 5' stone foundation. The roof is good and is shingle. It has a concrete floor on the sides and the center is earth. It has one side wing which was not as well constructed and was collapsed when I got it and needs to come off. The siding is in pretty good shape. The doors are sliding doors front and back and are in pretty bad shape. I have given it a light coat of barn red just because it was completely devoid of paint. I think it is in good enough shape to use as a residence, but I need for someone with expertise to look at it. Where do I get in touch with such a person?

Hi, I recently was drawn to this site with a question I received from my grandchildren----why are all the barns red? We're from Minnesota, and throughout Minn., Wisc, Iowa and most recently South Dakota, all we've seen are red barns. You asked for input from other states as well, so I have no answers for you, just input. We have red barns also, and most of us are asking the same questions--now I have some answers. Thanks---

I stumbled upon this looking for fence posts. What a wonderful surprize! Thank you for caring about these treasures. There is a barn near me built in 1835 that is to be razed within months due to its closeness to new homes and the gravel road. It is about a 40 x 60 and has local history. It survived a major fire in the 1800's as well as a tornado in 1959 (circa). Recently the new property owners were burning brush by it and caught the roof on fire. The damage is not severe. Can anyone save this barn. If we can find a place for it and funds to move it there are many of us "oldtimers" that would volunteer our help in getting it done. is it legal to paint a mail pouch ad on a barn now? It is my dream to do this, but I would not want to get into trouble. Do they still make mail pouch tobacco? Any info would be helpful. Thank you!

I grew up around barns living at the outskirts of Metro Detroit. I think the barn is more a link to America's heritage than baseball. I even started a company making my own beef jerky and microbrew calling it, "Nice Barn LLC." It was the least I could do. The drive from the Michigan State campus to Frankfort, MI holds some great old barns. This a great website...glad it's out there.

Your site is terrific. It's very well done. I am getting ready to reside the barn on my parents farm in Ohio. I want to do it in a way that is historically acurate. I need some help in identifying the current siding. I have some photos that I could email to anyone who thinks they could help. My email is RDusek@macconnect.com. Thank you.

A fellow Fed, (retiree), retired and moved to Minnesota. He purchased a farm with a foreman's house, main house, huge barn and two silos. The barn is for storage and he resides in one of the two silos. His silo is about 30 feet in diameter and about 60 feet tall. His wife's silo is about 45 feet in diamter and about 30 feet tall (currently being used as an office (both floors). Bob's silo has 6 floors, 1st floor is for heating, 2nd kitchen, 3rd bedroom guest, 4th bathroom, 5th bedroom master, 6th library, 7th top observation/computer/stargazing/dropping water baloons on something below:) The top floor has 8 convex windows on rollers and seven windows can be open at once with the 8th has all 8 windows stacked but still on rollers that could be closed in a moments notice. Has anyone heard of anything like this before? Sorry, Bob does not give tours. From a distance the place looks like a regular farm but when the windows are pulled together it looks different. Bill

hi! what is the name of the small door for chickens that appears on some barns -- it's tiny and cut in the lower wall, allowing chickens in and out of the barn...it is as simple as a 'chicken door'? it seems to me it has a name, like a 'chicken hatch' or something? HELP! it seems like a silly question, but it is important! thanks!

My mother (79 years old, farm girl) said this: back in the old days, companies would offer to paint barns for free in exchange for advertising on the side. Red attracts attention.

I came upon this site looking for information on the restoration of cement silos. We have purchased a small "farm" in Selkirk, NY with barns and two silos. We have a panalized cement silo,we believe, constructed between 1940-1950. The ground level concrete is eroding. We are not using the structure, but it keeps the ambiance of a former life and we would hate to loose it to the elements. Does anyone have information or the name of books or publications on silo restoration? Any info would be most appreciated.

We are building a horse barn--42'long, 32' wide, with 12x12 stalls and a 8' center aisle. We are trying to find plans for a gambrel roof truss/ floor truss combo for the second floor which will support hay storage and maybe a living quarters. Any suggestions on a combined truss design? Thanks for any help.

Hey, all you Barn Fans! Come see our wee little circa 1900 city barn when you're close by. We're gonna paint a 'MAIL POUCH TOBACCO' sign on the end of it. Don't know exactly when that'll be, but before we get to September, I think. In the meantime, if you care to drive by, you can read the 'BURMA-SHAVE' signs on the back fence. The corner of 8th and F in the Washburne Historic District, Springfield, Oregon. Watch for other vestiges of the passed to appear on-site!
