I love your web site! My husband and I recently purchased a property with a
beautiful nicely kept barn with a Gambrel styled roof that dates back to the
1800's. The barn was jacked up in 1915 to put a concrete floor&walls for stantions.
The problem is we can't use this barn and would hate to destroy it.It needs
to be moved. If there are any interested parties that would be interested in
purchasing the barn, we would entertain any and all offers. We live in Watertown,

I live in Houston, but have a 85 acre farm in La Grange , Tx. The old farm has
3 barns on it. One is an old chicken house (yes chicken farms were huge here
years ago...that is where the 'Chicken Ranch'came from in THE BEST LITTLE W...House
IN TEXAS) with all original wood. One is a huge hay barn that needs major work!
I would appreciate any references that can be provided either internet based
or books that I could use to help decide what and how I can restore these 2

I am doing an essay on barn colors and why? If you know anything about this
please help. Also, I am photographing old barns in Michigan, I would appreciate
some great locations of unique barns that would be treasures to my collection.
Usually I just drive around side roads, and this has yielded some interesting

I am trying to find out the location any other imformation concerning German
"fachwerk" half timbered barns in the U.S. I understand that there are fachwerk
dwellings in the Midwest and in west Texas but I can not find if there are any
barns in these areas. Somerset County, New Jersey is funding the restoration
of a fachwerk barn constructed in 1847. Any information concerning this unique
barn style would be appreciated.

GREEN SHINGLES. Since thousands of barns have green shingled roofs, I wanted
to shingle mine with green. Shingle distributers tell me that the tradition
green (willow green) shingles are no longer available. One manufacturer would
consider a special order to make the traditional green shingle, but only by
the truck load (500 squares!!!!). IF anyone knows where I can get green shingles
or is interested in sharing a truck load order, contact me at gary@sturtevant.org

I think that the roofs are red, because you discribed that many people came
from Germany. In Germany most roofs of the houses are red. So red roofs should
remind them to Germany. We live in Holland, close to Germany.

My wife and I recently bought a home in the Crosswicks Creek section of Hamilton
Township, NJ that has an old 2 story horse barn on the property. It's approximate
size is 30'x28'. Some of the lumber is hand hewn, but since one side is an apparent
addition with a flat roof, it has rotted the main beams that hold the two sides
together. I'm trying my best to do as much research on restoration and this
web site has been helpful and much appreciated. If anyone reading this does
restoration work in NJ, let me know. While the original horse stables are still
there, it will eventually be used for a garage and workshop area.

I heard yesterday that the last Mail Pouch Tobacco barn painter passed away
in November. There was a report on National Public Radio on his passing and
some comments by a fellow who sought his advice for painting his own advertisments
on barns. Too bad, it is the end of an era.

For anyone who is interested, we have purchased a Mail Pouch Barn sign that
was painted and signed by Harley Warrick in 1987. We proudly display this piece
of americana on our game room wall. This sign was originally painted as a fund-raiser
for charity; or so we were told. this sign was never displayed outside, and
is in perfect condition. We have an accompaning news paper article that was
written when the sign was for sale in an antique shop in Strasburg Ohio.

I am a wood toymaker and am currently making a somewhat relistic toy barn for
my son and decided to do some research on a few things, and came across this
wonderful site! The one question that I do have... I did notice that most barns
have barn boards that stand vertically instead of horizontally (the wood that

Yes, it is true that the last of the "Chew Mailpouch Tobacco Barn" painters
passed away, his name was Harley Warwick and he died Nov 28, 2000 in Wheeling,
WV. Mr. Warwick was a Belmont, Ohio native and was 76. I live in Morgantown,
Wv. and my mother-in-law who lives in Eastern Ohio sent me his obituary...she
knows I loved Mailpouch tobacco barns. I am interested in any books that may
have been written on the subject, but so far I've had no success?

On February 27,1989 I had a telephone conversation with Mary Ruth at the Helme
Tobacco Company in Wheeling, WV which resulted in my subsequent receipt of an
alphabetical listing,by county, of evey known Mail Pouch Tobacco barn in the
states of Maryland,Pennsylvania,Virginia and West Virginia. This listing also
contained specific detail location information i.e.,10 miles North on Highway
21. Since the early 1980's my wife and I, with the marvelous assistance of numerous
friends, have been acquiring photographs of these true bits of Vanishing America.
In our travels we have also found numerous barns/buildings not on the list.
I would be most appreciative of acquiring Eddie Robberts e-mail address as a
follow on to her marvelous article in Chasing Mail Pouch Barns
